Cruise ship worker arrested for groping passenger

Tuesday, 02 Jan, 2015 0

A cruise ship worker has been arrested and charged with groping a sleeping female passenger in her room.

Ship employee Karan Seechurn was detained at the weekend on the ship’s arrival in Bayonne relating to the incident which took place on December 23.

Seechurn, a Mauritius national, was responsible for replenishing guest room minibars and had key access to guest accommodation.

It is alleged he entered the woman’s room without permission and molested her while she was sleeping.

When the woman awoke and tried to leave, Seechurn is alleged to have made threats to burn down the ship if she reported the incident.

The court affidavit did not disclose which cruise ship the incident took place on but is widely thought to have been Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas, according to online reports.

Seechurn was remanded in custody and is charged with abusive sexual contact after a federal court appearance in New Jersey in the United States.

If convicted he could face a maximum of three years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
