Delta CEO: Most people supported our NRA stance

Delta Air Lines’ stand against the NRA cost the carrier millions in state tax breaks but it was a decision which was widely supported, it says.

Delta CEO Ed Bastion said the airline had received ‘tens of thousands’ of email messages and the vast majority were positive.

"I’d say 75% if not more have been supportive of the stance we take," Bastian told CNBC.

"People respect the fact that we make our own decisions and we stand by them and we’re not selling out relative to political interests, and I think we gained a lot of fans."

The Georgia state legislature ditched a fuel tax rebate plan which had been all but green lighted until Delta announced it would end NRA ticket discounts.

The tax break would have saved Delta about $40 million a year.

"We felt the state legislature was pushing us with respect to some of our business practices to a place we weren’t comfortable going," Bastion said.

"We’re big believers in the Second Amendment, we’re also big believers in the First Amendment, and letting our kids have a voice in this process."
