US and Canadian air crash investigators are at the scene at Toronto Pearson International Airport, which saw a regional jet land on its roof.
It left several injured but no fatalities among the 80 passengers and crew aboard the CRJ900 twin-jet aircraft operated as a Delta Air Lines flight.
It flipped over during the hard landing losing both wings.
Delta Flight 4819 from Minneapolis/St Paul was operated by Delta regional partner carrier Endeavor Air.
It left passengers hanging upside down in their safety belts ‘like bats’ passenger Pete Koukov said.
“The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident at Toronto-Pearson International Airport,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian.
“I want to express my thanks to the many Delta and Endeavor team members and the first responders on site.”
Passenger John Nelson said “it’s amazing that we’re still here.”
“When we hit, it was just a super hard, it hit the ground, and the plane went sideways.”.
Emergency crews were able to extinguish a fire quickly.
Some were able to unbuckle themselves while others had to be helped, during the ‘mass chaos.’
“We tried to get out of there as quickly as possible. Even now I smell like jet fuel,” Nelson added.
Canadian and US authorities are jointly investigating the cause of the crash
Two runways at Toronto Pearson will remain closed, the airport said.
