Destination providers can make real money from excursions
New tool offers local businesses links to big global market
The Travel Foundation has launched a new tool to help small tourism enterprises and community groups around the world sell their excursions to outbound tour operators.
The step-by-step guide gives practical advice on how to design an excursion, ensure that it is safe, set prices, start working with tour operators and provide excellent customer service. The guidelines are based on interviews with a range of tour operators, ground handlers and industry experts, and the manual is packed with real-life examples and insider tips.
Organisers of walking tours, animal watching excursions and visits to tribal areas are among those who will find the guide invaluable when starting to work with the outbound travel industry. Tourist boards, tour operators and ground handlers can help by distributing the guide to budding excursion organisers in their area.
Salli Felton, Acting Chief Executive at the Travel Foundation, said: "Helping small, independent excursion providers to link up with outbound tour operators has many potential benefits. Local communities are able to profit more from the tourism economy, while tour operators gain a wider selection of authentic experiences to offer to their customers."
The guide was written in collaboration with the International Centre for Research in Events, Tourism and Hospitality (ICRETH) at Leeds Metropolitan University.
Dr Xavier Font from Leeds Metropolitan University said: "Small businesses are excluded from trade because they don’t understand the rules of engagement. Supporting them to get access to the market is one of the most effective methods of offering unique, authentic products in the comfort and safety of a tour operator organised experience."
