Hong Kong based carrier Dragonair will operate its first ever flight powered by biofuel.
The flight from Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport to Hong Kong on March 21 will feature a 50:50 blend of traditional jet fuel and biofuel derived from used cooking oil.
It will be mainland China’s first ever scheduled commercial flight powered by a biofuel mix.
Dragonair said it will burn about 25 fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions than on a regular flight.
“This Dragonair flight is taking place as part of the Cathay Pacific Group’s drive to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable aviation biofuels for achieving a corporate target of carbon-neutral growth from 2020,” the airline said in a statement.
Cathay Pacific has taken a stake in US biofuel maker Fulcrum BioEnergy, and signed an agreement to buy 1.42 billion litres of sustainable aviation fuel over the next 10 years.
