Easy way to Morocco
EasyJet has become as the first airline to fly from the UK to Morocco under a European Union open skies agreement.
The no-frills carrier launched flights from Gatwick to Marrakech with fares starting at £60.98 return including taxes. The airline expects to carry around 90,000 passengers on the route within the first 12 months.
The EU began talks with Morocco in December 2005 about a new aviation agreement and the open skies pact was initiated. The EU open skies agreement is a principle which allows any EU registered airline to fly to any airport, as often as it wishes, for any price between those countries within the air services agreement.
The liberalisation is part of the Moroccan government’s plans to increase tourist numbers to 10 million by 2010.
The airline’s UK country manager David Osborne said: “Today is an exciting day for easyJet, as the first airline to operate to Morocco under the new open skies agreement, we continue to seize opportunities and lead the industry – both geographically and technically. Marrakech is a fantastic destination and we anticipate it becoming the hottest city break destination – all year round, for 2006/2007.”
