EU bans 92 ‘dubious’ carriers from Europe
The EU has drawn up a list of 92 airlines which will be banned from flying anywhere in Europe as part of a crackdown on “dubious” carriers.
All are said to flout safety standards and will be banned from European airports and European air space from today.
Among those on the blacklist is charter carrier Phuket Airlines which used to operate weekly services from London to Bangkok before the UK issued its own ban last year.
Some of the 92 were branded “flying coffins” by the EU.
The majority of the carriers are based in Africa, including all but one of the 51 carriers operating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and all airlines from Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Swaziland.
European transport commissioner Jacques Barrot said: “This list will keep dubious airlines out of Europe. It will make sure that all airlines in Europe’s sky meet the highest safety standards.”
The UK banned Phuket Airlines after fuel started leaking from the wing as it prepared for take-off. The airline also suffered regular delays.
