Ex-TC chief re-emerges at WH Smith

Monday, 04 Mar, 2005 0

Former Thomas Cook UK chief executive Alan Stewart is joining WH Smith as finance director.

He joins the board of the Swindon-based group from today and assumes his new role today replacing former finance director John Warren.

The loss-making retailer, which is facing stiff competition from supermarkets, sees Mr Stewart as having a “strong operational focus”.

He left Thomas Cook UK in 2002 after four years, including stints as chief financial officer in 1998 and chief executive in 2001.

WH Smith group chief executive Kate Swann said: “He is an experienced finance director with strong operational skills and a solid track record of turning around an underperforming business.”

The company made a pre-tax loss of £135 million in the year ending August 2004.
