Expedia ditches bitcoin payments

Tuesday, 09 Jul, 2018 0

Expedia has quietly ditched the bitcoin payment option from its website.

The company confirmed it has stopped accepting BTC payments, and acknowledged there had been various issues for customers using the cryptocurrency to make hotel bookings.

It will look at adopting other payment methods.

"Expedia no longer supports bitcoin as a payment method. Currently, we do not feel that we are able to offer the best experience for those using bitcoin, but will continue to evaluate various options in order to offer travelers flexible payment solutions," the company said via Christie Hudson, senior communications manager.

Expedia used Coinbase to process payments in bitcoin, first accepting digital payments back in 2014.

Since then the value of BTC has fluctuated widely.

Expedia is thought to have quietly suspended bitcoin payments nearly a month ago without any advance notice to customers.

Bitcoin users have few real options for booking travel products on mainstream websites although Cheapair.com has fully embraced digital payments.

It offers the option to pay in bitcoin, bitcoin cash, litecoin and dash.
