ExpressJet Airlines to cease operations by next month
Regional operator ExpressJet Airlines will end all commercial services at the end of next month.
After United Airlines decided to appoint CommutAir as its sole Embraer regional partner, the clock was ticking on ExpressJet’s imminent demise.
Now, it says it will end services on 30 September, when current federal funding for airlines runs out.
It will lay off most of its workforce as it has no other flying contracts with mainline carriers.
"United Airlines selected CommutAir as its sole ERJ-145 operator, and asked ExpressJet Airlines to wind-down flying as a United Express regional carrier. Due to the uncertainty of airline passenger travel as a result of the continuing pandemic, all ExpressJet flying for United Airlines will end on 30 September.
Both CommutAir and ExpressJet flew Embraer jets for the United Express regional brand.
ExpressJet is the third US regional airline to shut down since the start of the Covid-19 crisis after Trans States and Compass Airlines.
Before the pandemic, ExpressJet operated to more than 100 destinations with more than 3,000 weekly flights out of Chicago, Houston and Newark.
CommutAir serves about half as many cities, and is 40%-owned by United.
