A man has died and a Cape Cod beach was closed after the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts in more than 80 years.
Arthur Medici, 26, was boogie boarding just a few meters off the beach when the incident occurred.
He was rushed to hospital but died of injuries that experts are certain is consistent with a shark attack.
According to records by the Florida Program for Shark Research, the last shark attack death in the state happened way back in 1936.
Gavin Naylor, director of the program said attacks are ‘very rare’ but warned swimmers and surfers not to venture into the water alone or at dawn or sun down.
Newcomb Hollow Beach was closed Sunday and warning signs were erected.
Shark sightings have been on the rise recently due to an increase in the gray seal population.
