First for San Diego: year-round cruises
Carnival Cruise Lines is introducing a year-round cruise schedule from San Diego, a first for the region and a move that is adding to California’s allure as a port destination.
Carnival next year will offer four-and-five-day cruises to Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada on the 2,052-passenger “Elation.”
Last year, San Diego had 234,000 passengers embarking from its port. That made it the third-largest in the state behind Los Angeles and Long Beach.
“The Port of San Diego has long aimed to lure a cruise ship to call San Diego its home,” Rita Vandergaw, the port’s director of marketing, told the Union-Tribune.
She said no incentives were given to Carnival but added the port’s docking facilities will have to be improved to draw more ships.
The “Elation” will offer 78 voyages annually. It’s expected to carry some 177,000 passengers
Carnival said it will also continue to offer cruises on the “Spirit,” which is making 23 eight-day voyages off the Mexican Riviera this year.
San Diego’s attractiveness as a year-round port include its high demographics and its easy access to high population areas such as Phoenix and Las Vegas.
The new cruises will start at $339, according to Carnival.
