Flights cancelled as Jetstar ground workers go on strike this week
Budget carrier Jetstar is warning of cancellations later this week after the Transport Workers’ Union announced its latest move in a long running labour dispute.
The airline has cancelled dozens of flights with many from Melbourne and Sydney.
The union says more than 250 workers will strike for 24 hours on Wednesday.
It will also affect Avalon, Brisbane, Cairns and Adelaide airports.
The union says Jetstar’s latest offer is ‘designed to keep Jetstar workers impoverished.’
Jetstar chief executive Gareth Evans hit out at the latest industrial action but believes disruption will be minimal with no international services impacted yet.
"The focus is on our customers and very much minimising the disruption for those customers and getting them away on their journeys as quickly as possible," Evans said.
Jetstar parent Qantas group won’t budge on a maximum 3% pay increase it deems as its ‘best and final offer.’
"We believe this is a very, very fair package in the circumstances. The current rate of private sector wage growth is about 2.4%, so this is well above that and well in excess of what most other businesses are offering," Evans said.
Jetstar ground workers also went on strike twice in December.
