Flights resume as ash cloud clears

Friday, 22 Nov, 2012 0

The ash cloud from Mount Tongariro is clearing to the east of New Zealand and air services to Rotorua have restarted.

Air New Zealand reported that Taupo and Gisborne airports remain affected and flights to these areas are subject to delays and cancellations. However, normal operations should resume later today (Thursday).

Air New Zealand said it is working with the Civil Aviation Authority, the MetService and other authorities to keep up to date with the ash movement and forecasts.

The airline is also making adjustments to flight routes to ensure aircraft remain clear of any ash.

Passengers are advised to check the Air New Zealand website www.airnewzealand.co.nz for the latest flight arrivals and departures information.

Tongariro’s Te Maari crater erupted for about five minutes on Wednesday afternoon, emitting a plume of ash and gas up to 4km into the air.

It sent trekkers on the popular Tongariro Alpine Crossing scurrying down the mountain.
