Fog causes widespread disruption at Heathrow today
Passengers travelling from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports are experiencing delays and cancellations this morning due to thick fog.
The lack of visibility has caused several flights to be cancelled while others are experiencing delays of varying length.
British Airways said that for safety reasons air traffic control is having to allow greater space between landing aircraft, and this in turn is resulting in a reduced number of aircraft being allowed to land each hour.
The fog is also affecting departing flights, with the disruption apparently worst at Heathrow. The disruption comes just a day after the government approved the expansion of Heathrow with the building of a third runway.
In a statement on its website, BA said: "We are sorry for the disruption and delays which are being caused by~the poor weather and will do all we can to minimise the effect it has on our operations."
