Garuda Indonesia’s former CEO Emirsyah Satar has been handed an eight-year sentence behind bars for bribery and money laundering.
Satar was also hit with a fine after being found guilty of accepting bribes for procuring new aircraft.
It relates to orders of Airbus A320 and Airbus A330 aircraft and Rolls Royce engines.
Both those companies have settled corruption charges in multiple countries.
Satar was one of the longest serving chief executives of the airline, holding the position from 2005 until 2014.
Indonesia’s KPK anti-corruption agency opened an investigation back in 2017.
Satar’ sentence was lighter than expected due to his work at the flag carrier in ‘bringing Garuda Indonesia recognition as a prestigious airline,’ according to the judge’s verdict.
Satar is considering an appeal.
Garuda has a history of leaders with questionable morals.
Last year CEO Ari Askhara was sacked for trying to evade excise duty by smuggling a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on a new aircraft the airline had flown from the Airbus factory in France.
