Galveston: A Dickens of a good time
Brush off your bowlers and prepare your petticoats as Galveston Historical Foundation presents the 51st annual Dickens on The Strand this weekend December 6-8.
Held the first weekend in December, this annual festival is a holiday tradition with great family programming, live entertainment, special events and more.
Dickens on The Strand is based on 19th-century Victorian London, and features parades, non-stop entertainment on four stages and roaming characters throughout the festival.
This year sees new additions like Tiny Tim’s Play Land and Shopkeeper Skills Village.
Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts are filled with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items.
Unique activities taking place include bed races, live performers, storytelling and bagpipers.
Kickoff the festival with a night of music, drinks and fun in Fezziwig’s Beer Hall.
The festival features local school band and school choir performances, a costume contest, circus shows, and even 19t century English cricket.
Also learn about the history of The Strand on a walking tour and pub crawl into the past. The tour explores the stories, buildings, and history of the National Historic Landmark district and calls at three festival pubs to sample some of Saint Arnold Brewing Company’s signature ales.
