Indonesia flag carrier Garuda is targeting 2017 for the re-launch of flights to the US.
It follows Indonesian aviation regaining its Category 1 aviation safety rating from the US Federal Aviation Administration last month.
US flights could begin next year via Japan, Garuda said.
Garuda will likely fly to Los Angeles but New York is also under consideration.
"Our plan to re-operate US flights is expected to strengthen Garuda’s position as a global aviation player, with the upgraded rating from FAA which recognises Indonesia’s aviation safety and security standard," said Benny Butarbutar, Garuda’s vice president of corporate communications.
Japan already has a fifth freedom agreement with Indonesia allowing passengers to board flights en route to a third country.
Garuda has an existing codeshare agreement with fellow SkyTeam partner Delta Airlines, which flies from Tokyo Haneda to the US West Coast.
