Great base for cyclin’, walkin’ ‘n fishin’

US aficionado Graham McKenzie checks into the Park Place Hotel, Traverse City, Michigan.

"If you have ever been to Traverse City you will know what a fabulous place it is to base yourself to see so much of what is good about Northern Michigan. You not only have access the many sports activities but also some of the best local food in the whole of the USA. If you have not been make plans now !

Honed over many generations of agriculture and fishing, the local restaurants offer cuisine suited to indigenous produce. In addition to this heritage food you can add very decent wine and a host of locally brewed beers. Combined with this, as mentioned, are a host of sports activities ranging from walking, cycling, golf to, and of course with one of the world’s largest fresh water lakes on your door step, sailing, kayaking, boarding and swimming.

So within the geographical base of Traverse City where should you stay? You can’t really go wrong if you choose the Park Place Hotel. It offers good quality and good value accommodation in the heart of the downtown area. If like me, you enjoy a stroll around small town America with unique independent shops, specialist restaurants and brew pubs then it is less than a two-minute walk.

The rooms are generously appointed and if the stroll down to main street doesn’t quite kill of that work out bug then an exercise room and pool are free for hotel residents. Meals are  served in the ground floor restaurant but in the evening the top floor piano bar,  probably the highest point in Traverse City, becomes surprisingly lively.

Throughout the property and indeed throughout the city, the service mentality is high on the agenda and I for one could have no complaints whatsoever about the Park Place Hotel."
