Guam: visitors go from 109 to one million
The island of Guam is celebrating 40 years of tourism from virtually no visitors to one million tourists with a series of special events, festivals, contests and memorial tree plantings.
In 1967, a Pan Am flight from Japan arrived on Guam carrying 109 passengers who were the island’s very first tourist group.
Forty years later, with annual arrivals of over one million, tourism has become the single largest industry on Guam.
The celebration officially began earlier this year with a press conference held in Tokyo, where it was also announced that the Guam Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is searching for the original 109 passengers and the 20 couples who were married on Guam forty years ago.
Other events this month include a VIP reception hosted by the governor with various other events.
The first day of Tourism Month on 1 May will kick off with a special Airport Greeting Service that includes refreshments from the ProStart Culinary Students and entertainment at the Guam International Airport.
