HAL fined for polluting Alaska’s Glacier Bay

Thursday, 11 Sep, 2019 0

Holland America Line has settled a waste dumping case in an Alaska national park and will pay a fine of more than $17,000.

HAL’s Westerdam leaked greywater into Glacier Bay during a call a year ago, according to a notice of violation.

It states about 22,500 gallons of untreated water discharged into the bay after a worker opened the wrong valve by mistake.

The cruise line informed state officials after the incident was discovered.

Greywater runoff usually comes from cleaning or used water from kitchen operations.

It is an offence to discharge anything within the national park.

HAL agreed to pay the fine but did not admit to any of the ‘factual allegations or legal claims.’

It was also fined $250 by the National Park Service.
