HIAL airports install new energy-efficient lighting

Energy efficient runway lighting project completed at Inverness and Kirkwall airports

Kirkwall and Inverness Airports have completed installation of energy-efficient Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) systems.

The two projects have cost over £9 million and represent a major milestone in Highlands and Islands Airports Limited’s sustainable infrastructure upgrades.

The new AGL systems, which provide crucial visual guidance to pilots during landing, taxiing, and take off in low visibility and darkness, feature enhanced LED technology.

It means the airports remain compliant with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirements while reducing energy consumption by up to 80%

Careful planning during the work resulted in minimal disruption to flights and passengers, HIAL said.

Graeme Bell, Inverness Airport General Manager, said: “This project has delivered a modern, energy-efficient lighting system that strengthens our infrastructure while supporting our environmental objectives.”

The projects are part of HIAL’s wider strategic goals to invest in sustainable technologies for long-term safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
