Hotel tycoon sued by father
The head of the £800 million Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotels empire is being sued by his 86-year-old father who claims he has been squeezed out of the business.
In a trial being held at the May Fair Hotel in London, Bal Mohinder Singh has accused his son, multi-millionaire Jasminder Singh, of forcing him to retire as a director of the hotel group in 2010 and excluding him from the business.
Jasminder Singh is said to be worth around £415 million and his father is believed to be suing him for £50 million.
The High Court hearing is being held at the May Fair, one of Edwardian’s hotels in central London, due to the plaintiff’s poor health.
Giving evidence, Bal Mohinder Singh accused his son of abandoning the Sikh tradition of sharing family property by ousting him from the business.
His lawyers claim that as a shareholder he continued to have rights in the company.
Lawyers for Jasminder, 62, and his brother Herinder, 46, have disputed Bal Mohinder’s claims in written submissions.
They deny that the relationship between the brothers and the rest of the family was governed by principles and practices of the "Hindu joint family".
The hearing continues.
