Hotham snowed under – well not quite!
A large scale low weather front settled over the highest resort in Victoria overnight, producing the largest snowfall for season 2006 to date.
Eleven centimetres of snow was dumped at Hotham and the entire mountain has been blanketed with dry, high quality powder and cold temperatures and plenty of moisture ensured that it was snowing as far down as about 1300 metres.
“This natural snowfall has certainly added to the fantastic efforts of our snowmaking team,” explained Len Dobell, General Manager of Operations. “Assessments will be made hourly as to whether we can open further lifted terrain.”
The natural snow base has now shot up to 39cm, with the snow depths in man made areas at almost 70cm, with skiing now rated as ‘good’ across all areas, with ‘fair to good’ skiing on the Summit.
The snowfall is predicted to keep falling throughout the week, with up to thirty centimetres more predicted to fall through the rest of the week.
Set to benefit most from the falls are August visitors to the resort, who will be able to enjoy an extremely solid snow base across the mountain.
The snowfall also augers well for Hotham’s massive range of events and activities that are set to take place in August and September, such as the Powder Festival, the Billabong Banked Slalom and the Winter Triathlon.
