'Indefinite’ Birmingham Airport strike announced

Union Unite says there is yet another risk of major disruption at Birmingham Airport.

This time, refuelling tanker drivers and operators will strike over pay.

An airport strike would severely disrupt flight operations as they are responsible for refuelling over three quarters of planes at the airport, Unite says.

They have rejected a 9% pay offer by employer Menzies.

This, Unite claims, is a real terms pay cut considering the real rate of inflation.

Last year, they received a 6% rise.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: Menzies can afford to pay and it should pay. The company cannot expect these workers to agree to two years’ of real terms pay cuts.”

If it goes ahead, the airport strike would be indefinite.

It is set to begin on Tuesday 15 August which would inevitably lead to cancelled flights.

Airlines at Birmingham include TUI, easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Emirates.

Unite regional officer Sulinder Singh said: This dispute can be avoided but Menzies needs to return with an offer our members can accept.”
