British tourists in Istanbul have been told to remain vigilant following an explosion near a police headquarters in the city yesterday.
At least five people were wounded, one seriously, according to Istanbul governor Vasip Sahin, who said the explosion was caused by a motorcycle bomb.
It happened in the Yenibosna area, a few kilometres from Istanbul Ataturk Airport.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated its travel advice to Turkey, saying: "An explosion occurred near a police headquarters in the Yenibosna area on the European side of Istanbul on 6 October 2016; you should stay away from the immediate area and follow the advice of local authorities."
Earlier, the FCO confirmed a state of emergency, imposed in July following the country’s failed military coup, has been extended for three months from the end of September.
The FCO said: "The state of emergency is focused on those involved in the attempted coup and isn’t expected to impact tourists," but it warned: "Rallies and demonstrations may take place at short notice".
"You should be vigilant, particularly in areas where crowds may gather, and stay well away from any demonstrations."
