Jetstar cancels 100 flights due to first ever pilots strike

Thursday, 12 Dec, 2019 0

Budget carrier Jetstar Airways has been forced to cancel about 100 flights scheduled for this weekend due an upcoming pilot’s strike.

Australian Federation of Air Pilots members will take four-hour stoppages on December 14 and 15.

They are striking to demand improved pay and working conditions.

For each of the two days there will be two waves of strikes staring with narrowbody pilots downing tools in the morning and then pilots operating Boeing 787s on international routes will stop work in the afternoon.

Despite this, the airline says it thinks it can still operate 80% of its schedule by re-timing flights and transferring some passengers onto Qantas operated services.

The union said more strikes are possible up until December 20.

"We are hoping to resume discussions with the company to reach an agreement so that no further action needs to be taken after this period," AFAP executive director Simon Lutton said.

Strike action does not affect Jetstar affiliates Jetstar Asia, Jetstar Japan and Jetstar Pacific.
