Kabul hotels rise from the ashes
Afghanistan: Investors believe city will once again become tourist magnet
Investors are reported to be ploughing money into the redevelopment of hotels in the ruined city of Kabul, in the expectation that tourists will soon start flooding back to Afghanistan. A report in the Financial Times centres on the 110-room Hotel Kabul, which was largely destroyed in the country’s civil war – but now a multi-million project is aiming to rebuild the facility to include shops, a health club and many other luxury facets. Investors clearly believe the city is in need of a five-star hotel to accommodate tourists and businessmen in what used to be a magnet for travellers from all over the world. One of the hotel’s former managers told the newspaper: “Once it was very beautiful – they had a bar, concerts, dancing, weddings. It was full – full of tourists!” The Hotel Kabul is by no means the only tourist-related project in the city; the Intercontinental is scheduled for a major overhaul this year and there are plans for a new 200-room hotel near the city’s US embassy. Before you make plans to visit the city, however, be aware that he Foreign Office is still warning against non-essential travel to Kabul – and ALL travel to other parts of the country.
