Kansas City International Airport is to welcome its first ever regular transatlantic scheduled service.
Beginning May 25, Icelandair will operate three flights a week on a seasonal basis with Boeing 757 aircraft to its Keflavík International hub near Reykjavik.
That enables passengers to connect onwards to more than 25 major cities in continental Europe.
It becomes only the fourth international route at Kansas City after Cancun, Punta Cana in Dominican Republic; and Toronto.
"Icelandair has be in operation for over 80 years with a long and illustrious history but today marks the first time in that history that Icelandair will offer non-stop flights to and from the heart of America to Iceland and beyond," said Icelandair CEO Bjorgolfur Johannsson.
The airline already serves 16 destinations in the US year-round or seasonally, and only recently started moving into mid-tier cities amid intense competition from Icelandic budget airline WOW and Norwegian Air.
According to the Kansas City Star, airport officials are actively seeking more transatlantic routes with the UK or Germany being touted.
Icelandair also announced it is returning to Baltimore-Washington International Airport after many years and will operate four flights a week from May 28.
