Kerala tourism wins at pata
Kumarakom Responsible Tourism and Kerala Tourism E-Newsletter win awards
Kerala Tourism got two top honours at the prestigious Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) 2014 Awards.
The state tourism department’s pioneering Responsible Tourism initiative in Kumarakom and its online newsletter have won the PATA Gold awards, said an announcement from the Macau Government Tourism Office, which supports and sponsors the awards.
The awards will be presented on September 19 at the Diamond Island City Hall in Phnom Penh.
Kumarakom Responsible Tourism Project won in the Corporate Social Responsibility category while Kerala Tourism E-Newsletter received the recognition in the Marketing Media section. This is the second consecutive PATA Gold award for the E-Newsletter, which is designed and developed by Invis Multimedia.
In January this year, the Kumarakom Responsible Tourism Project had won the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)’s Ullysses Prize for sustainable tourism, the first such award for an Indian Tourism Board.
"This is a remarkable achievement for Kerala," said state Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar "Through the Kumarakom model, we have shown the world that it is possible to successfully link the local community with the hospitality industry," he added.
"We are humbled by the fact that Kerala has become a global leader and Kumarakom a global model in sustainable tourism," said Kerala Tourism Secretary Suman Billa.
The PATA Awards are the latest in a string of honours for Kerala Tourism this year. After the UNWTO Ullysses Prize in January, Kerala Tourism won four top prizes at the National Tourism Awards 2012-13 in February, besides winning the Golden City Gate award, at ITB
