Korea to open a third DMZ hiking trail

South Korea’s tourism agency has announced a third hiking trail along the demilitarized zone will open to the public next month.
The trail officially opens on August 10 near the border town of Paju, situated about 30 kilometres north of Seoul.
It is the last of an initial batch of three trails to open to the public agreed between the two Koreas.
The 20-kilometre loop begins at Imjingak Pavilion and passes Dorasan Observatory and one of the demolished guard posts.
Tours can now be booked on the agency’s website.
The first two DMZ Peace Trails opened in April and June this year.
The DMZ is about 4km wide, and spans 250 km in length.
Although most of the guard posts were demolished to aid reconciliation on both sides, the DMZ is still one of the most heavily fortified areas in the world.
The two Koreas are technically still at war as no peace treaty – only a truce – was signed after hostilities ended in the 1950s.
