The long quest for a home for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is over.
Los Angeles has been selected by movie mogul George Lucas for the $1 billion museum, beating off rival San Francisco.
The museum will feature some of the filmmaker’s personal collection of memorabilia from the Star Wars franchise and other movies, photography and paintings.
A tentative opening date of May 2020 has been set, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti.
"After extensive due diligence and deliberation, the Board of Directors of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is pleased to announce plans to build the museum in Exposition Park in Los Angeles," a statement said.
"We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive support we received from both San Francisco and Los Angeles during our selection process. Settling on a location proved to be an extremely difficult decision precisely because of the desirability of both sites and cities."
LA was not the first choice for the museum.
Lucas’ wife’s hometown Chicago was first selected but he eventually pulled out last year due to a long running land dispute and lawsuit over the proposed Chicago waterfront site.
At the time destination marketing agency Choose Chicago called it an ‘enormous loss’ to the city.
