‘Lethal’ advice given to hiking fans

If you are planning a hike up Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, be sure NOT to take a copy of this month’s Trail magazine, which has admitted it published incorrect instructions on how to get down from the mountain in poor visibility. According to the Daily Telegraph, the February edition of the specialist hill-walking magazine gives walkers “potentially lethal” directions that would lead them over a 1,000-foot cliff near the summit of the mountain. Local mountaineers have reportedly claimed that the instructions, which it is claimed were incorrect because of a production error, were “obviously and dangerously wrong”. One reportedly told the newspaper: “If anyone takes that advice it will definitely put their life at risk. It is very unfortunate.” Guy Proctor, editor of the magazine, reportedly told the Telegraph: “There is a simple explanation – a sentence was missed from the article.” He said the magazine always advised walkers and climbers to use a compass and Ordnance Survey map, adding: “Anyone looking at a map could see what has gone wrong and it will hopefully be picked up by readers.” The next edition of the magazine will contain a correction.
