Low-cost airline plans Gatwick-India flights

Indian budget airline IndiGo is reportedly planning to launch its first routes to Europe, including a service to Gatwick.

According to Times of India, the airline could start flying to London via Central Asia and the one-stop flights could be in operation by next summer.

IndiGo has been looking at Tbilisi and Baku, the capitals of Georgia and Azerbaijan, as a transit point for Europe flights and has held talks with airport authorities in Tbilisi.

The airline has also being mulling Istanbul as a transit point but may be put off by higher airport fees there.

IndiGo recently converted an order for 125 Airbus A320 jets to the longer range A321 Neo and currently has a total of 150 Neos on order.

It takes delivery of the first A321 Neo this month.

IndiGo has been ramping up its international network with new routes set to launch later this week to Phuket in Thailand and to Hong Kong in December.

The largest Indian carrier by market share, IndiGo serves 11 international destinations and operates more than 1,000 flights daily across India.
