Mexican state imposes tourist tax

Tuesday, 05 Nov, 2019 0

It is about to get a little more expensive for visitors traveling to Mexico’s Baja California Sur.

Foreign arrivals will have to pay a 350 peso ($18.50) tourist tax from November 9.

It applies to all overnight visitors

The Baja California Sur government hopes the fee will generate about 490 million pesos ($25 million) which will go toward ‘social infrastructure,’ housing, education, health and other needs, known as the Baja California Sur Sustainability Fund.

Tax payment kiosks are set up at airports while the port authority will handle payments for cruise ship passengers.

Governor Carlos Mendoza Davis said the tourist tax can also be paid online or via a mobile app.

The tax was approved by the state Congress back in 2016 but has only just been signed off by the Governor.

The state is home to popular resort town like Cabo San Lucas, and San Jose del Cabo.

However the tourism industry has been criticized for doing little to alleviate poverty in townships surrounding these tourism areas where many low paid tourism workers reside.
