Monarch in $916m aircraft order
Monarch Airlines is to acquire six new generation Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner long range aircraft worth $916 million.
The airline has taken options on a further four 787s saying the aircraft will form the core of its future long haul fleet.
Delivery is due between 2010 and 2013.
Monarch, which curretly operates Airbus A330, A300 and Boeing 767s on long haul routes, says the 787 will use 20% less fuel per passenger, producing lower emmissions and quieter take offs and landings.
The airline’s CEO Peter Brown said: “After months of extensive evaluation, we are delighted to have concluded that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is the ideal aircraft to replace Monarch’s existing fleet of wide-bodied aircraft.”
Boeing’s sales senior vice-president for Europe, Russia and central Asia Marlin Dailey said: “The 787 has proven appeal in the long haul leisure market, with faster cruise speeds enabling shorter sector times on flights.”
The aircraft, capable of carrying up to 250 passengers, will offer wider seats, seat-back monitors, bigger windows, improved air conditioning, more storage space and improved lighting.
