MSC Cruises has signed an agreement for up to four new mega cruise ships, each able to carry more than 5,000 passengers.
The line has inked a letter of intent for the LNG-powered ships which will be built at STX France.
"The announcement is further proof, if needed, of our view that this industry presents significant opportunities for additional growth going forward for both our brand and product, as well as of our firm commitment to be best-positioned to capture them to the fullest," said Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises executive chairman.
"For this reason, our ten-plus year investment plan now encompasses up to eleven new MSC Cruises ships, coming into service between 2017 and 2026.
The agreement covers firm orders for two ships and two under option with expected delivery from 2022-2026.
They will be in MSC’s new ‘world class’ category at more than 200,000 gross tons.
The contract for the four vessels is worth up to $4.5 billion.
No designs have been unveiled yet but the ships will feature ‘a futuristic design that will maximise the open space available to our guests,’ Vago said.
