Nashville will become the first airport in the US to officially grant ride share services by Uber and Lyft.
Ride share drivers will now be able to collect passengers in a designated area of the airport.
To operate within the airport Uber and Lyft will have to apply for a permit and pay fees.
Ride share drivers regularly pick up arriving air travelers at airports around the country but Nashville will be the first to officially OK the services.
Ride sharing services are outlawed at several airports including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Memphis and Raleigh-Durham.
Airport officials have been in discussion with the two ride sharing companies for months trying to thrash out a deal that doesn’t discriminate against registered taxi drivers.
For each pick-up Uber or Lyft drivers will be required to pay a fee of $3.50 which will be tracked using geo-fencing technology.
Traditional taxi companies pay $1.50 for every airport pickup.
"We know they will operate here anyway," but we need to be fair, we are trying to accommodate both our operators and our passengers who do want to use this service," said Nashville airport spokeswoman Shannon Sumrall.
