Ridesharing has finally arrived for cross-border travel from the US to Mexico.
Uber launches ‘Uber Passport’ today, which offers a single journey from San Diego across the San Ysidro border into Tijuana.
As the name suggests, all riders will need to carry their passports.
On top of the usual rates, there is a $20 ‘convenience fee’ to lure enough drivers for the service.
"It’s very exciting for us because there are a lot of places where we could have launched a cross-border product, but we recognize the importance of the largest border crossing in the world and the unique relationship between San Diego and Tijuana," said Christopher Ballard, Southern California general manager for Uber.
"These are cities whose families, cultures and economies are closely linked."
However returning back to the US is slightly more complicated.
Due to transportation rules, riders will have to exit their Uber at Tijuana, cross over the border on foot and hail a new vehicle on the US side.
