Security concerns have prompted the Mayor of Brussels to cancel the fireworks and other New Year’s Eve events in the city.
The country’s Prime Minister Charles Michel said the decision was taken ‘given information we have received’.
In the latest developments, police in Brussels have this morning arrested six people in connection with an alleged plot to target the city tonight.
Earlier this week, two people were arrested on the suspicion of planning attacks in the city towards the end of the year.
Brussels has been on high alert since the terror attacks in Paris on November 13, which killed 130 people.
In November, the city was placed under a four-day lockdown amid security fears.
Meanwhile, authorities in Paris have decided to show a video show tonight instead of the usual fireworks in light of the November 13 attacks.
"We have decided to mark the New Year in an atmosphere of sobriety and togetherness," said Mayor Anne Hidalgo on the city’s official website.
Extra soldiers, police and emergency teams have been drafted in to Brussels and Paris and other major cities for tonight’s celebrations, including London, Rome, New York, and Berlin.
In Turkey, authorities say they have foiled a major plot to attack the New Year celebrations in Ankara.
