Non-union workers cause ripple effect at Australian airports
Outraged baggage handlers in Melbourne staged a sudden strike on August 20 to protest the hiring of non-union casual workers by Qantas airlines to not only work but also to oversee operations at Melbourne Airport.
As a result, thousands of passengers were thrown into a tailspin on Wednesday by indefinite delays. The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) warned that Qantas’ cost cutting practices have hit a new low and forecasted the action would spread to other Qantas sites. The AMWU is hoping other unions, from flight attendants, counter station attendants to pilots will band together against what they believe is an outrageous attack on the Australian work force. Although the sudden walk-out occurred in Melbourne the AMWU expects the strike to spread nationally.
