Now Jakarta faces flood threat

Sunday, 03 Nov, 2011 0

Jakarta is the latest Asian capital to face a flood threat.

Heavy rains are causing congestion on roads, although the central government has sought to reassure residents that it was prepared should a catastrophe arise similar

to the floods that swamped Jakarta in 2007 and 2002.

The 2007 floods put large parts of the capital under water, displacing thousands of residents.

The next year in the five-year cycle of Jakarta floods that have been linked to La Nina and El Nino is 2012.

Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo told residents that his administration has flood preparations in hand and that the city is not at risk of suffering the same fate as Bangkok, which is currently battling floodwaters in city suburbs.

The Jakarta administration claims it is ready for the Southeast Asian Games that kick off in the capital and in Palembang on November 11.

Police are planning a system of road closures in Jakarta to block off regular traffic so the athletes’ convoys can get from their hotels to sporting venues unhindered.
