NZ climate action cruise ship protests becoming ‘intimidating’
New Zealand’s cruise industry says climate action protests against cruise ships could soon boil over into possible physical action.
CEO of the New Zealand Cruise Association, Jacqui Lloyd, says recent protests have become more intimidating.
“We’ve noticed a lot more intimidation from the protests. The volume of sound from the megaphones and the chants but also stand-over tactics for staff that work around the port area,” she claimed.
Protest group Climate Liberation Aotearoa says this is false.
“Not true at all. We are staging protest action and those actions can be confronting,” spokesperson James Cockle said.
“These big companies are polluting our environment, they’re trashing our waterways, and are getting away with it.”
Activists want cruise ships banned from certain natural areas which are at most risk from pollution such as Fiordland.
Separately, the cruise industry has slammed the government for pricing cruise lines out of the country, which has already led to a drop in cruise calls annually.
Cruise Lines International Association Australasia called out the NZ government’s proposal to impose a triple digit hike in cruise related fees.
CLIA CEO Joel Katz said New Zealand cruise calls are down by more than 20% for the upcoming summer season.
