Omicron lands in Australia
The Omicron variant has founds its way into Australia.
Health officials in New South Wales said two cases were detected in passengers who arrived in Australia at the weekend from South Africa.
Both are asymptomatic and are in isolation, the New South Wales Ministry of Health said.
"The two passengers were amongst fourteen people from southern Africa who arrived from Doha to Sydney," it said.
The other 12 passengers originating from southern Africa are undergoing a14-day hotel quarantine while all others on the flight must isolate.
Just a day earlier Australia announced new border to protect the country against Omicron.
No non-Australian residents who have recently been an African country where the variant is present will be allowed into Australia.
These include South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi and Mozambique.
Flights from those countries have also been banned.
Omicron has been detected in Hong Kong, Israel, the UK, Germany, Belgium and Italy.
