Orbitz settles lawsuit claim with Skiplagged
Orbitz Worldwide says it has reached a settlement with ‘hidden city’ flight search website Skiplagged.
Orbitz and United Airlines jointly sued Skiplagged founder Aktarer Zaman late last year, saying the site "intentionally and maliciously" interfered with United’s and Orbitz’ business relationship.
Skiplagged’s business model highlights airfares with one or more connecting flights where customers deplane before the final destination, often at much cheaper fares than conventional point to point ticketing.
In November, after being served a lawsuit, Skiplagged crowd funded a legal defense to the tune of $75,000, funded by over 3,000 users.
The agreement with Orbitz means Skiplagged will remove Orbitz logos from the site and will stop redirecting customers.
United still plans to go ahead with its legal fight.
"Mr. Zaman continues to openly encourage customers to engage in deceptive behavior. United is not seeking money but rather an injunction against Mr. Zaman and Skiplagged to prevent this from happening in the future," United said.
