Police investigate ‘biggest ever’ in-flight theft

Sunday, 04 May, 2016 0

A police investigation is underway after a man reported the theft of HK$2 million (£175,500) in cash and valuables from his hand luggage during an Emirates flight.

According to reports, the Turkish businessman had put his bag in an overhead compartment during the flight from Dubai to Hong Kong.

He didn’t realise the money and two watches had been stolen until after he disembarked.

It is believed to be the costliest case of in-flight theft in recent years.

Last summer the South China Morning Post reported that in-flight theft has been on the rise, particular targeting passengers on flights arriving into Hong Kong.

A spokesperson for Emirates said it was working with the police investigation.

"There will be no further comments at this time from Emirates on what is an ongoing investigation," said a spokesman.
