Qantas building new maintenance hub at LAX

Wednesday, 5 November 20143 min read

Qantas Airways said it will invest US$30 million in a new maintenance facility at Los Angeles International Airport.

The new maintenance building comes with a 20-year lease and will replace the current operation center which will be demolished in 2016 to make way for a $US1.2 billion satellite terminal.

The new maintenance building will be able to accommodate three A380s said Roger Johnson, deputy executive director airports development at LAX.

"They are moving I think a lot of their North American operations hub down here, so it is going to be an office building as well as the hangar building," he said.

Qantas opened a oneworld alliance business lounge at the Tom Bradley terminal in June, which can hold 200 passengers and is currently being upgraded to increase capacity to 600.

Qantas flies twice a day from Los Angeles to Sydney and once a day from Brisbane and Melbourne.

Rivals Air New Zealand also has big plans at LAX.

The carrier is also moving to the Tom Brandley Terminal in December giving its passengers access to a new lounge and more than 150,000 square feet of retail and dining space in the Great Hall.
