Record year for unruly passenger behavior
Last year was the worst ever by far for unruly passenger incidents in the US, with the Federal Aviation Administration logging nearly 6,000. Of the 5,981 incidents over 70% were related to mask wearing.
In 2021, the FAA opened 1,081 investigations into incidents, which is a 494% increase on the average year. The FAA referred just 37 to the FBI for criminal prosecution, while it initiated its own civil enforcement actions in 350 cases.
