Royal Caribbean orders two LNG-powered cruise ships

Friday, 11 Oct, 2016 0
Royal Caribbean has signed an agreement for two new ships to be powered by liquefied natural gas.

Scheduled for delivery in 2022 and 2024, they will be a new class of ship, called ‘Icon.’

Accommodating about 5,000 guests, the ships will be built at Meyer Turku shipyard.

Few details have been given so far on ship design but the line promises ‘innovative new guest experience elements.’

"Our guests expect us to push every envelope we can and on this new class of ship, we began by challenging ourselves to find a new approach to power and propulsion that is safe, reliable, and more energy-efficient than ever before," said Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.

The company will start testing fuel cell technology on an existing Oasis-class ship next, and will gradually build up fuel cell developments on new Quantum-class ships currently being constructed.
