Selfie sticks officially banned at Disney

Monday, 29 June 20153 min read

Beginning Tuesday June 30, Walt Disney Co is formally banning all selfie sticks from Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

The ban will be extended to parks in Paris and Tokyo the following day, the company said.

Disney had already imposed a partial ban, stopping the use of the extension sticks used for taking smartphone self-portraits on rides.

However the policy was holding up the operation of rides frequently, Disney said.

"We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family, and unfortunately selfie sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast," said Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty.

From Tuesday visitors arriving with selfie sticks at the entrance will be asked to leave them at a storage facility or return them to their cars before being granted access.

The sticks have been banned at several attractions and museums around the country including on rides Universal and SeaWorld.
